Alvin R. Abaño - August 2006

Meet Mr. Physique Universe-Philippines NABBA 2006 - Alvin R. Abaño. Alvin was born in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental and grew up in Marilao, Bulacan. He went to elementary and high school at St. Mary's College in Meycauayan, Bulacan.

Basketball was his passion growing up. However, at age 19, he realized that pursuing a career in basketball may not be the best thing for him since coaches look for height. He turned to bodybuilding and weight training.

Jay Jurado, his mentor and trainor played a big role in influencing him to join competitions. His first competition was at age 22 in Davao City. He came in as 2nd placer in the Novice category of Mr. Davao City. The competition bug bit him. He trained harder and later on won the following year's title.

When he won the Mr. Physique Universe-Philippines NABBA last July 15, he was at his best and top condition. When the contestants came out for preliminary judging, everybody noticed his proportioned, symmetrical and well-defined body. The judges felt he deserved the title even though he was up against athletes of commercial value and popular names. At 5'6", he weighed 144.3 lbs. of pure, lean muscle mass. He will be the Philippines representative to the Mr. Universe Physique competition to be held in Spain this coming November, 2006.

Alvin started training for the Mr. Universe-Philippines contest in March 2006, four months before the actual contest. Imagine the training and diet preparation that comes with it. The discipline and hard work only an athlete can describe goes without saying.

He trains heavy during pre-contest as well as off season. He believes that preparing for the contest is 40% physical training with weights and cardio. Diet is 60%. Again, one can only imagine what an athlete goes through during these trying times. The moodiness, the crankiness and the unpredictable state of mind are just examples of what loved ones put up with.

Alvin trains in the gym 4 times a week. His training is a combination of powerlifting and bodybuilding. His back and his glutes are his best body parts because he works hard in making them superior. He thinks that his upper chest and legs need a little more work. But having won the Best Poser award at the Mr. Universe-Philippines NABBA, he surely knows which body parts work well for his posing routine.

Alvin is looking to grab the Mr. Philippines title in the Men's Open Category in the next upcoming National competitions. His long-term goal is to represent the Philippines in the Mr. Universe Men's Open class category. Thanks to the moral support of his family and friends, all his dreams will all come true.

Congratulations, Alvin. We're behind you all the way!
