Jonathan Pateno - January 2003
Related
Jonathan Pateno belongs to a new breed of health and fitness athletes. His most recent title is the Over-all champion of Ginoong Rizaleno last Dec. 15, 2002. Like most athletes, he works hard on his daily training, diet and supplementation. What makes him stand out among the rest is his ability to listen to his own body in order to develop intuition and awareness in everything his body consumes and processes. He is a quiet man, well disciplined and totally dedicated to his sport.
Jonathan started his weight training at the Ironhouse Gym in Pasig in 1998. He went in the gym to watch his brother train in karate. While waiting, he played around with the weights and Brother Louie Yu, the owner of the gym saw the potential in him and encouraged him to train in the gym and compete for the annual Mr. Valentine Bodybuilding Competition in February, 1998. He did not place in this event but the experience gave him the determination to develop his potential. He kept a low profile for 2 years but worked his butt off training, sweating, gaining, learning new techniques, proper workout for each body part, developing a program for his body and finally getting ready for his next show.
Currently, Jonathan works as a gym instructor evening shift at the Rainforest Fitness Center in Pasig City while working full time as a machinist operator at a nearby company. He considers his legs as his best body part/asset due to genetics as well as his biceps, while training his back and abs more because they are his weakest body part. He gives credit to Mr. Louie Yu for showing him the ropes of diet and nutrition. His short- term goal is to compete in the heavyweight division for the prestigious Mr. Philippines title in the next 2 years or so. His long-term goal is to go abroad and work to support his family.
Jonathan is an example of a visionary athlete. He has come a long way from his native Aklan where he was born and raised and eventually settled in Metro Manila in 1994. He has achieved his goals one step at a time. With the kind of schedule he carries around, one would wonder when and how he finds time for maintaining his physique. Well, that's why he belongs in a totally different genre of athletes. Keep up the good work, Jonathan!
