Philip Quimpo - February 2003

If you've never met an honest to goodness guy, Philip Quimpo epitomizes just that - an athlete of good moral values and humble beginnings. Maybe because he grew up in the province working in the rice fields, coconut plantations and fishing as a means of livelihood, or maybe because of good family upbringing - for whatever reason, he still carries those values to this day.

He is not ashamed to tell you he comes from a modest background, sometimes so poor there was no food to eat at the table. Yet, he has never taken advantage of the generosity of his benefactors whether co-athletes, sponsors, coaches or the like just because he is less fortunate.

Philip remembers growing up skinny. So when he came to Manila from Aklan province to seek greener pastures, he was amazed to see the big guys at the gym next to the hotel where he worked. This motivated him to work hard and attain his goal to get big.

He joined a gym in Cubao, Quezon City and because of his good relationship with the owners, they sponsored him to train for competitions to promote the gym.

Starting out at 107 lbs. and standing 5'8" tall, he worked his body weight up to 152 lbs. to this date when competing. His first competition was at the Mr. Santa Claus in 1997 placing 6th in the Bantam division at 140 lbs. Unfortunately, the hotel he was working at burned down and he had to go home. His hiatus for 3 years gave him a chance to recharge his energy to prepare for a comeback. In January 2001, he came back to Manila to resume his training seriously and after 1 year he faced the world of competition again. "Competitions give me a surge in my adrenalines to motivate me to work hard and discipline myself. I can see myself competing for a long time even in my 40's or 50's." says Philip.

At 28 yrs. old, he is still trying to reach his peak, at times experimenting on different weight programs to improve his weak parts like his legs. His abs are his best assets. Ironically, he does not have to work them because they're there and have always been there off-season or pre-contest. He attributes good genetics to his abs which a lot of competitors and regular people envy.

We at Pinoymuscle feel Philip is one athlete with the greatest potential physically. Moreover, an athlete of good morals is one of a kind in this industry. Our hats off to you, Philip!
